I started painting the "A Touch of Dream" series following two enigmatic experiences I had. The first of these occurred in 1983, when I had a vivid dream in the early morning. I dreamt that I was sitting on a seat drinking a glass of orange juice, along with a handsome young blonde-headed boy. "See Douglas, " I said - and suddenly awoke, realizing that it was a dream.

This dream had left a strong impression and I wondered why I had dreamt it. I certainly did not know any boys named Douglas. Later that morning I went to the junior high school where I was teaching. That very morning, the principal announced to the teachers, "Everyone, today a rare event will take place: a new student , a foreigner, will start here. His name is Douglas Gilbert." I got goosebumps and went pale at once. That was the first experience.

The second went like this: my grandfather, who had passed away many years before, appeared before me in a dream, and said, "Watch your steps!" I did not know what he meant. Later that day, I went to a karate "dojyo"(hall) to practice. While I was practicing the "back kick", I slipped badly and fell over, fracturing a bone in my toe. Immediately the training master ran up to me, exclaiming "Watch your steps!" As with the first experience, I was shocked.

As a consequence of these experiences, I now believe that "dreaming" is imbued with meaning in my life. Admittedly, it is rare for a dream to actually produce a solution for any of my real -life problems. However, I do not believe that dreams are completely separate from our day-to-day existence, but rather, that everyone lives in a world in which realities and dreams are mixed. Expressing that thought another way, dreaming comes from one's subconscious and reality comes from the outer layer of one's consciousness.
I now make it a habit of keeping a notebook beside my pillow, and keeping a diary of my dreams in the morning. In my art I seek not to express the story of a dream, nor merely the scenes of a dream, but rather "A Touch of Dream". As an artist, I seek to capture the universality of dreamings.

When I actually sit down at a canvas to begin painting, I clear my mind. This attitude can be compared to meditation.
The works in the "A Touch of Dream" series all originate from this artistic process. And in this, my first solo exhibition in New York, I would like to show you some of these paintings.
